Tuscany: the fine art of la dolce vita
And, if you're seeking somewhere to stay in this district, head directly for La Ripolina agriturismo set-up outside Buonconvento. This is exactly as an isolated Tuscan farmhouse should be (Loc. Pieve di Piana; 0039 0577 282280, www.laripolina.it; doubles from £55, breakfast included).

    PleinAir - 368 - Marzo 2003

    Mete e Itinerari
Laura Cresti gestisce a Buonconvento La Ripolina, uno stupendo agriturismo dove ogni stanza è arredata con mobili d'epoca e ha un colore diverso: «Odio i numeri, mi piacciono i colori!». All'interno dei terreni dell'azienda si trova anche la Pieve di Piana, un monumento che risale all'800.

    TIMESONLINE - Marzo 2007

    The Sunday Times
Close your eyes, if you will, and picture Tuscany. Its endless ruffled hills, vineyards and woods are just a medieval caravan short of perfection. Behind you is an old stone village; before you, an isolated farmstead. This is La Ripolina, its farmhouse weather-beaten to exacting Tuscan standards. Inside, agriturismo simplicity has been subtly tweaked for the comfort-seeking classes. Breakfast is on the loggia, dinner in nearby villages, with the interim spent swimming, cycling or resting whichever part of you needs resting. Tuscany does this well, and La Ripolina is as Tuscan as you get.

Weatherbeaten to exacting Tuscan standards, La Ripolina is an agriturismo farmstead with a sort of Renaissance loggia for sunlit breakfasts. • Around us

    Every place is magic

Routes and places in our neighborhood, discovering traditions and medieval villages, good wine, good food.

    Siena

Siena is the capital of the province, is located between the hills of Chianti, the Montagnola and the Crete Senesi, surrounded in a hilly landscape of great beauty. The city is characterized by unity of style dating back to the medieval period and included in the list of World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Siena is famous in the world for the Palio. It is a horse race that takes place in the Piazza del Campo in which take part in the various districts ( contrade) of the city. The Palio event resulting from an ancient medieval joust, and it is a historical continuum with the traditions of the city. Remarkable quality of the cathedral (1226-1370) which includes works by the most important Italian artists of the period such as the pulpit of Niccolò Pisano, or the “Piccolomini” altar attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti

    Buonconvento

Important agricultural center located on the nicer side of the Crete Senesi, Buonconvento experienced a remarkable development thanks to its strategic location at the confluence between the Arbia and Ombrone river and its position along the Via Francigena. The fourteenth century village has perfectly preserved its houses, and along the main street there is the Museum of Sacred Art of the Val d'Arbia. Very interesting are also the Art Nouveau buildings that are located both inside and outside of the village.

    Montalcino

Montalcino is located about 38 km from Siena, is recognized as the city of wine and oil. Its territory is located between the valleys of Ombrone, Orcia and Asso river . Montalcino has preserved the charm of an ancient medieval village with the remains of its ancient walls and the fortress, the last bastion of the Sienese Republic. Near Montalcino, there have been numerous archaeological finds that have allowed us to trace a map of settlements dating back to Etruscan and Roman times.

    Monte Oliveto Maggiore

Monte Oliveto Maggiore is the abbey to which it relates and is part of the Congregation of the Benedictine Olivetani. The construction began in 1393 and ended in 1526. Situated on a hill overlooking the Crete Senesi in a forest of cypresses, oaks and pines, is one of the most important monuments of Tuscany. A large number of works of art are enclosed in it, including a magnificent choir inlays and the loister with frescoes by Sodoma and Signorelli depicting the life of St. Benedict.

    Bagno Vignoni

Bagno Vignoni is a spa town known for the benefits of its thermal waters since Roman times. It was developed in the Middle Ages with the domain of families Tintinnano first, then Salimbeni and finally under the protection of the city of Siena. Famous for its "square of water”, a large spa bath which occupies almost the entire surface of its the largest square. Located in the Natural and Cultural Park of the Val d'Orcia was appointed in 2004 as a World Heritage by UNESCO, for its excellent state of preservation.

    San Galgano

The Monastery of San Galgano is a beautiful building, considered one of the finest examples of Italian Gothic-Cistercian . In 1300 the abbey was destroyed by the troops commanded by Sir John Hawkwood who plundered it and took away the copper roof. An abbey that has a lawn as floor and the sky as roof, located in a beautiful valley. Today it is a place of legends such as San Galgano who stripped himself of all his wealth and stuck his sword in the stone, where it is still located in the nearby chapel of Montasiepi.

  • Agriturismo La Ripolina

La Ripolina is situated in the heart of the “Crete Senesi” (Sienese Clay Hills) about 25 km from Siena. It is close to Montalcino, land of the famous Brunello wine, and is surrounded by 100 ha of vineyards and grain cultivations. These charming hills make the countryside unique and ever so beautiful in all seasons. This area is full of history, with its ancient stones and red brick walls, and therefore is a special place for physical and mental relaxation.

For 20 years the Cresti family has offered warm and welcoming hospitality, so typical of the Tuscan people.

The apartments on the farm are situated in the medieval “Pieve di Piana” and also in the cottages on the hill facing it. All apartments have been recently renovated and are provided with heat, fireplace, TV, private entrance and outdoor area. The furniture is original antique Tuscan from the end of the last century. As for the Bed & Breakfast, the rooms are located in the “Ripoli” building which dates back to 1500 and they all have a private bathroom with shower. Breakfast is served in the loggia with a beautiful view that will remind you of Leonardo da Vinci’s great paintings. In the main living room there is a magnificent fireplace where all our guests are welcome to gather and chat.

The large swimming pool with solarium, the ping-pong table, mountain bikes, playground for children, the walks, the silence and fresh air will all make your stay very relaxing. All of our guests are welcome to use the barbecue, laundry room and other outdoor areas for picnics.

The nearest town is Buonconvento which is about 2,5 km away.

Being close to Siena and to many other beautiful towns that are rich in art such as Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano make Ripolina an ideal place for day trips and outings. These may also include the Abbeys of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and Sant’Antimo and the many museums in the vicinity. There are also some famous thermal waters nearby for anyone who needs treatment.

Various restaurants, riding-grounds and health spas around the area offer fixed prices.

The magnificent Tuscan seashore on the Tyrrhenian coast is about a one-hour drive by car.

  • S. Innocenza a Piana

The Pieve of St. Innocence at Piana, or simply the Church of Piana as it is called in this area, is located about 3 Kms. from Buonconvento

The Pieve of St. Innocence at Piana, or simply the Church of Piana as it is called in this area, is located about 3 Kms. from Buonconvento and from the top of the hill where it was built, dominates the Stile River valley. The Pieve's history gets lost in the night of the years and for this reason is surrounded by a veil of mystery. It is difficult to date the construction; some historians would put it in the 7th - 8th century. At that time, in fact, the farming population was in great need of protection from the assalts of the barbarians. (Thus explaining the fortified structure of the building.) From the time of its founding, the Parish of St. Innocence was considered one of the richest of the diocese because of the extention of its lands and the amount of its revenue. The importance of the Parish grew as the years passes, thanks also to the treasures collected by the various rectors, who often were members of powerful Sienese families. After 1282 the assets of the Church of Piana were united with those of Vescovado, and the Bishop of Siena became rector also of the inhabitants of the Arbia Valley. Heavier fortifications were ordered by the Republic of Siena for the Church of Piana in 1398. Its location as a defense point was important for repelling attacks of the Florentine soldiers who had infiltrated the Sienese territory the previous year. Due to lack of funds at the time, the Republic delegated the Spedale ( hospital, a very rich institution ) to buy the church and carry out the fortification. After the reconstruction, the site was so safe and welcoming that Pope Paul III stayed there. The occasion was on July 7, 1533 during the Pope's return trip to Rome from Nice where he had met with Charles V of Spain and Francis I of France. Free from Vescovado of Siena in 1599, the Church of Piana became indipendent again several centuries later. In exchange for this achieved autonomy, it was established that the parish would supply the bishop's refectory whit a certain amount of "moscatello" wine (demonstrating the excellent quality of wine produced in this area). An enrichment of the Pieve's decorations began in the 17th century. Thanks the to succession of vicars serving as regents of the church, paintings, altars and baroque plasters were added. With the fall of the Republic of Siena and the passage to the Grandutchy of Madici Family, the Church of Piana became less important. Its history followed the fate of the residents who were mostly farmers. Gone the time of well- being, the parish persevered with the modest offerings from the community. Nevertheless, in 1889 a bell tower was erected, there bells were hung and the cemetery was restored. Cracks in the nave made restoration of the building itself necessary in the 1933. Some valuable frescoes were revealed as the work began. This discovery forced the Sienese section of the National Department Responsible for Monuments and Arlistic Treasures to intervene. The Sovrintendenza decided to destriy the baroque altars of the 1700's and to remove the black and white striped stucco which "made the church resemble a funeral parlor". Its original simplicity was restored. In excavating below the main altar, material compiling the ancient altar was discovered and reconstruct. With the gradual adbandon of the fields, the Church of Piana ceased to have a guiding role in the lives of the people of the Arbia Valley, and in 1963 the parish was transferred. The changing fate that characterized the history of the Church of Piana did not however erode its attraction. The building, whose outline rises magestically in the sky, stimulates even now great historical and architectual interest. A visit to this site offers tranquil and peaceful moments.

  • Up to the 60s, the lands on which today extends the Ripolina were part of a large estate, La Piana, belonging to the noble Roman family Ceriana Maineri Lante della Rovere.
By the Act n. 756 of September 15, 1964, which provided the extinction of any employment relationship under sharecropping agreement from September 23, 1974, the management of large farms like La Piana became too onerous for property owners who would have paid a living wage to all those who worked their fields, instead of dividing the crops, as happened in the era of sharecropping.
For this reason the company was split into several parcels and that was when Enzo and Italo Cresti bought 100 hectares of land that today is the Ripolina.
Initially, in addition to crops (usually cereal), there was also practiced the breeding of pigs but it was abandoned. Then several acres of vineyards were planted, primarily white grapes (Pinot, Trebbiano and Malvasia), to produce a wine that was particularly appreciated. It is said that in past centuries the lands around Piana’s church have provided the wine for the Archbishop of Siena’s table. Two artificial lakes were built for the irrigation of crops that required a lot of water, such as maize, because in these clay soils it was missing on summer.
At the premature death of Italo followed the great difficulty encountered by Enzo who suddenly found himself alone to handle the farm, a dream of both brothers.
With the passing of years, the coming of age  of Italo’s children and the division of the inheritance, the company came to Enzo and his family, his wife Nella and their children, Laura and Francesco.
In 1992 an other era began, that of farm holidays, allowing him to retrieve in dribs and drabs the real estate that was falling apart over the years and the abandonment.
The Ripolina is now a company which produces cereals such as wheat, corn and sunflower. The vineyard, reduced to a few hectares because of the crisis that is facing the wine industry, has been turned from white to red grape, such as Cabernet, Merlot and ??? DOC d'Orcia. There's not wine production anymore, but grapes are sold at harvest and vinified in other wineries.
The farm has been growing over the years welcoming thousands of guests from all over the world.
Enzo still runs the farm of his company, assisted by Laura for the tourism and Francesco for the agrarian part. Nella, unfortunately, has recently passed away after having spent a lifetime together with Enzo at the Ripolina.
